Read on about why Uruguay dove hunting is so good in this small country right next to Argentina.
If dove hunting at high volume destinations in South America is some of the best fun one can have while shooting a shotgun, then dove hunting trips to Uruguay is sure to weigh in at the top of the scale.
Every season, more hunters are learning that high-volume dove shooting is not limited to dove hunting in Cordoba Argentina.
How high is the volume in Uruguay?
It is very high…one can expect to shoot over thirty boxes of shells per day. It is recommended that one shoot a 20 ga. in order to reduce the effects of recoil that can add up over a three or four day shoot.
Kevlar shoulder protectors can be rented for a reasonable price, and if one does not already have one, their use is strongly recommended.
One other often overlooked item is a durable pair of shooting gloves. Golf gloves make a good substitute, but one certainly needs to use something.
It is easy to identify those who did not bring their gloves on a hunt because they are often captured in photos of Uruguay dove hunts loading cartridges into their guns with duct tape around wrapped around their fingers—again, these are the folks who forgot to bring a pair of gloves.

A Uruguay Bird Hunt: How many doves will I shoot?
This is easily one our most common questions, and it is one of the most difficult answer as well.
With respect to Uruguay dove hunting, it is a function of several factors, and these factors all add up to a sum. Therefore, the more one can influence (increase) one of them, the more one can stack the deck and “pump up the volume”, so to speak.
First, one needs to be quite aggressive. A continuous effort to reload quickly and acquire new targets is essential.
Second, one needs to not hesitate to shoot a lot. You will miss every shot you do not take, so this is important. Practice your skeet and sporting clays before you arrive, and stay sharp. Daylight: an often overlooked factor. In late December, the days are longer, offering more time in the field to shoot. Last, but not least—go often. Dove hunting in Uruguay is not overly expensive, and it has never been easier to fly non-stop from the continental US to Uruguay.
Non-stop flights are now available daily (seasonal) and every other day (rest of the year) from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Carrasco International Airport (MVD) in Montevideo, Uruguay. Clearing customs and firearms in Montevideo is easy and fast. Those who have been dove hunting in Argentina can tell you that the lines to get a hunting license and gun permit there can take over an hour if you hit it on the wrong day and time.
Uruguay on the other hand, is easy.

Uruguay Wingshooting
Uruguay Doves
The Eared dove is a species of dove that closely resembles the Mourning dove in North America, and the flight patterns are indistinguishable. The birds still “dance” and flutter in flight, offering shooters who go wingshooting in Uruguay an opportunity to attend the ultimate shooting clinic. High-crossers, low line drives, pop up shots, and every other shot angle imaginable will all happen every fifteen minutes.
One can never become bored on a Uruguay dove shooting trip; it is pure excitement!
What do we do with the birds we shoot? This is another one of our most common questions, but this one has an easy answer. We donate the birds to the poor by participating in food programs with a homeless shelter in Montevideo. Migrant farm workers clean all of the birds after the hunt. These are folks with household incomes of $250 U.S. dollars per month, so they are happy to have the opportunity to earn extra money by cleaning doves for two cents per bird.
Uruguay Dove Hunts:
When is the best time to go?
Anytime! These birds do not migrate, and hatch around four to five times per year, keeping their numbers robust and plentiful. Since they are always in the area, the dove hunting in Uruguay is never slow—never. One can shoot three or more cases of shotshells each and every day of the year that weather permits. Very inclement weather such as high winds and/or heavy precipitation can ruin a bird hunting trip in Uruguay, or any other place in the world. Fortunately, the weather in the western part of the country is mild, and bad weather days are not common, and seldom last long when they do.
